Description
American Traveler is seeking an experienced RN for a Medical Surgical Cardiac ICU position requiring ACLS, BLS, and NIHSS certifications for a 13-week night shift contract.
Details
- 16-bed Medical Surgical Cardiac ICU in an acute care hospital setting
- Patient population includes young adults through geriatrics with diagnoses such as sepsis, STEMI, COVID, stroke, neurosurgery, renal failure, respiratory failure, COPD, cancer, and DKA
- Nurse-to-patient ratio of 1:2 with occasional 1:1 for TPA, balloon pump, and post-craniotomy recovery
- Specialized equipment includes Gaymar Hypothermia, Arrow Balloon Pump, Camino Neuro monitoring, CRRT, Impella, EVDs, and lumbar drains
- RNs are required to titrate drips including sedation, paralytics, pressors, antihypertensives, heparin, and insulin
- RNs are responsible for reading and interpreting their own telemetry strips
- Respiratory support ranges from nasal cannula to mechanical ventilation
- Charting is performed in Epic
- 12-hour night shifts (1830–0700); every other weekend required
- Holiday coverage required on an as-needed basis
- Floating primarily to PCU, with potential to float to other hospital units based on abilities
- Unit scheduler creates the schedule (no self-scheduling)
Requirements
- Active NE state or Compact (NLC) RN license required; pending licenses not accepted
- Current certifications required: BLS, ACLS, and NIHSS; pending certifications not accepted
- Minimum 1 year of RN experience required
- ICU nursing experience required
- Epic EMR experience required
- Two professional references required: one supervisor from within the last 12 months and one peer or supervisor from within the last 3 years, including dates of employment and eligibility for rehire
- Valid driver's license required for consideration
- Candidates must reside more than 50 miles from the facility, as verified by driver's license
- Candidates may not be currently or recently employed (full-time, part-time, or PRN) directly by any CommonSpirit-affiliated facility, including CHI or Dignity Health, within the past year
Additional Information
- Fast-paced unit with an eICU remote monitoring system; unit culture emphasizes bedside shift report and intentional hourly rounding
- Charge nurse is present on each shift; nurse aides/PCTs are available at a 1:10 ratio
- ICPs and balloon pump management are occasionally performed, though complex assignments are not necessarily assigned to travelers
- Unit orientation consists of 2 shifts, followed by a pass/fail open-book skills exam on the Friday of orientation week; a score of 90% or higher is required to pass
- Navy blue scrubs required
- Artificial nails are prohibited in all patient care areas; refusal to remove them may result to contract termination
- RTO must be requested upfront; 7 days or fewer per 13-week contract; additional RTO will not be approved after consideration
- The ideal candidate is highly motivated, a critical thinker, and willing to seek out resources and embrace learning in complex clinical situations
- The unit serves a culturally diverse community including non-English-speaking patients; cultural competency and inclusive care are highly valued
